A truly magnificent location, high a top a cliff with sweeping bay views to the City of Melbourne 30 miles distant. Instability of the cliff edge precluded the placement of the pool on the view/sunny side of the house, and it was decided to wrap the structure around a pool courtyard, making the house a series of connected “wings”. In the manner of local expectations, the house is one storey only and thus is somewhat spread out.

The main wing runs parallel to the cliff and gives maximum exposure to view and natural light. This contains Kitchen, Casual Dining, and Family Rooms, with dramatic walls of glass allowing for views of the bay by the pool courtyard on the landside. An eastern wing, at right angles to the main, holds the bedrooms, with the Master Bedroom having a full water view. A “guest wing” is attached to this, running parallel to the main, and nearly connecting to the west wing, containing Living, Formal Dining, Study and two car, one large boat, garage. The subsequent pool courtyard is both private and protected from cool winds. The main living space opens to a Porch/Verandah, which continues as an open patio and lawn extending to the cliff edge.

By designing the house as an accumulation of smaller elements and using a varied palette of exterior treatments (local stone, clapboards and stucco), the “cottage” feel is maintained although this is a comparatively large house.
