The biggest challenge of this project was accommodating the needs of the client while meeting Town and State Zoning requirements. An existing building (demolished) allowed the new house to be closer to the pond than otherwise would be possible. Limited, volumetric expansion was allowed, but side-yard setbacks were a major issue since the lot was a narrow, irregular shape.

As a result the house itself has an unusual configuration but the goals of gaining an abundance of favorable light and desirable views were exceeded for this family of (5). Utilizing the natural lay of the land enhances the livability of the house, and the sense of comfort, while lounging on the porches, is manifest.

The “Bungalow Style”, with its large gables and soffit overhangs, coupled with a unique approach to “Greek Revival” influenced exterior trim, has this house remarkably handsome and inviting. This approach, as applied to a snow region, gives rise to the term “New England Bungalow”.
